         The victim of whimsical persecutions.

  • Forlorn (adj): Marked by or showing hopelessness.

         The last forlorn attempt. A forlorn cause.

  • Scurrilous (adj): Characterised by obscene or vulgar humor; indecently abusive.

         There were very few takers for his scurrilous antics.

  • Avow (v):To affirm; declare.

         The extremists avowed war on the present government.
